RIP: Syd Barrett (1946-2006)
July 11th, 2006
At age 60, Cancer finally put an end to the sad and mysterious life of Syd Barrett. His passing occured last friday, but was only made public today.
Barrett was the founding light and a long-lasting influence of the band Pink Floyd. Additionally, before his mental collapse and subsequent life as a hermit, he gifted the world with two precious and bizzarre solo albums.
While this news is not particularly appropriate to this blog, I did want to share this information. Syd has had a major influence on my music, and our company Disc of Light supports cancer research through the American Cancer Society.
Syd, may you now find the peace that you could not in this life.
Update: There seems to be some disagreement over how Syd died. Some sources say it is believed that he died of complications of Diabetes, while other reputable sources (like the BBC) have stated Cancer was the cause.

Yes, this is said news indeed. I’ve been a huge fan of Pink Floyd and only recently have been on the Roger Water’s concert. Pink Floyd have also had a large imprint on the music that my earlier band was writing and much of our early material was psychedelic music, inspired by the great Pink Floyd and Syd as a part of it.
It is really a sad life story for a pioneering musician.
Of course, the use of drugs at that time killed many talented artists, such as Elvis, Hendrix and others.
