HOWTO: MacGyver a Heating Pad

April 22nd, 2005

You’ve been sitting at a dual head display for four hours. Your head goes back and forth again and again. Your neck is in spasm. What do you do? Quick, man! Think!

Our protagonist moves off to the kitchen area of the office. From his pocket, he produces one of the ziplock bags he always keeps at hand. He opens the bag, then quickly places it on the counter before him.

Stealthily, he moves over to the paper towels and rolls off two or three large handfuls of toweling. As he walks toward the sink area, he lightly compresses the towels into a large wad. He opens the hot water tap fully. And waits. And waits.

Steam rises from the water, now over one hundred degrees fahrenheit. Quickly, he swishes the wad under the spigot. And again. He repeats this until the wad is sodden, but not overly drippy (ziplocks can leak occasionally).

With a deft move, the sodden wad of toweling is slipped into the waiting mouth of the bag, and in a trice, it is zipped shut. Two additional dry towels, folded double, are placed over the neck (or any other area with a muscle in spasm) in the event that this newly created “heating pad” (as I have dubbed it) is too hot. This “pad” is then placed over the dry towels.

Our protagonist feels sweet relief moving throughout the affected area. As the Pack cools, the dry towels can be removed.
