The Aeron Chair: Are Ergonomics Universal?

January 31st, 2005

There is a really funny but instructive article on Dack.com About the Aeron “ergonomic” Chair.
This is not a new article, oh no. It was originally posted in 2002, but comments were being added as recently as December 21, 2004. Dack has finally locked out further comments. (Google cache here.)
(Warning: the initial article has 3 funny movies illustrating the point of the post. These movies contain language that is NSFW.)

The thing is this: if you read the comments, just about half the people say they are incredibly happy with their Aeron, but the other half say it stinks and increaces discomfort. This perfectly illustrates the single most important thing you can know about Ergo products- One Size Does Not Fit All. There are NO universal products.

That being said, there are some universal CONCEPTS of ergonomics, and we will be running a series on some of those in the near future. In the mean time, here is one:

90/90/90

The perfect ergonomic positioning of a computer workstation begins with the rule of 90/90/90. That is- your seat should be exactly high enough that your feet sit flat on the floor at a 90º angle to your shins. Your knees should be in a 90º angle formed by your calves and thighs. Your desk or work surface should be placed so that while typing on your keyboard, your elbows are at a 90º angle between your forearms and your biceps.

Have a great day!
